What is Supima Cotton and Why It's the Top 1% of Cotton
Most t-shirts are made from regular cotton — soft enough when new, but thin and stretched out within a few washes. Supima cotton is different, and once you understand why, it's hard to settle for anything less.
What Makes Supima Cotton Different
Supima stands for "Superior Pima" — a specific type of extra-long staple cotton grown primarily in the United States. Regular cotton fibers are short and prone to breaking, which is why ordinary cotton t-shirts pill, thin out, and lose shape quickly.
Supima cotton fibers are up to 50% longer than standard cotton. Longer fibers mean a smoother, softer feel with less roughness against the skin, greater strength so the fabric resists tearing and pilling, better colour retention with less fading after repeated washes, and a cleaner drape so the fabric hangs better instead of looking boxy or stiff.
Why It's Called the Top 1% of Cotton
Supima cotton makes up less than 1% of all cotton grown globally. Growing it requires specific climate conditions and more careful cultivation than standard cotton, which is why it costs more to produce — and why very few brands use it at accessible price points.
Most fast-fashion and budget t-shirt brands use regular combed cotton because it's cheaper to source at scale. Premium brands that do use Supima usually price it well above ₹2,000 per t-shirt.
